PROMISE Award

  • Eligible 2010 high school graduates will receive annual awards valued at the lesser of tuition and manadatory fees or $4,750 at the West Virginia public or private college they choose to attend.
  • The amount of a PROMISE Scholarship awarded in combination with aid from all other sources shall not exceed the cost of the education at the institution the recipient is attending.  (This restriction does not apply to those members of the WV National Guard, recipients of an Underwood-Smith Teacher Scholarship, and recipients of a WV Engineering, Science and Technology Scholarship).  The PROMISE Scholarship will not pay an amount that exceeds the cost of tuition and mandatory fees (required by all students at the institution) at state institutions of higher education.
  • Awards can not be used at out-of-state institutions.

Length of Scholarship for Degree Seeking Students

  • An eligible student seeking an associate's degree may be eligible to receive PROMISE funding for a maximum of two years (four semesters) or completion of associate degree requirements.
  • An eligible student seeking a baccalaureate degree may be eligible to receive PROMISE funding for a maximum of four years (eight semesters) or completion of baccalaureate requirements.

Renewal

  • PROMISE is renewable for up to eight consecutive semesters for baccalaureate degree seeking students, as long as students meet the minimum eligibility requirements.  PROMISE Renewal Requirements.

Transferring

  • Students transferring from one PROMISE eligible institution to another can maintain PROMISE eligibility.  Students should contact the Financial Aid office at the institution they wish to attend in order to transfer the scholarship.

Leave of Absence or Deferral

  • If a student would like to defer his/her scholarship or needs to take a leave of absence, he/she should see the Eligible for Renewal of Award link.
